Soup exhibition

Soup- the Tate staff collective are having a busy Biennial. The next show, which features Red Wire founding member Michael Aitken is in conjunction with The Education Deanary Arts Curriculum at The Gateway Building (Liverpool Hope University). The P.V is on Thurs 27th November and it goes on to 18th February.

A foundation

Brickface are launching a new publication at A Foundation, and to coincide, a number of bands and artists are there for one night only- which includes 5 films of Joshua Tennant eating. Unfortuntely its the same night as Slowness, so you'll have to make a choice

Slowness

The Times have placed Slowness 3rd in its top 5 exhibitions opening this week. This is a massive coup for us, and we hope you can trust them and us and come down on Friday at 6.30. There's a live performance link-up to Bangkok  by Laura Cooper

A bit of banter

There has been a bit of a spate of critical banter regarding The Biennial and the Capital of Culture- not least our own NAN Tour last week. Joshua Tennant can be heard talking about these issues as part of the Portable Radio scheme which is a UK touring podcast to find out about art in 10 different venues. Joshua and Amy Goring can also be seen discussing the CoC in Tenantspin's recent Cultural Commentators, along with Hamish Mclain and Gabriel Stones (The Royal Standard), Jim Buso (NAN Scheme) John O Hare (Wolstenholme Projects) and Ian Jackson (artinliverpool.com)

NAN Tour and Fear Yourself pics

The Winner Takes it All? Tour was last weekend, which was Red Wire and The Royal Standard showing 35 artists round Liverpool to see whats going on with The Capital of Culture, and theres some pictures here. It resulted in a talk at Static. Also some Fear Yourself pictures are now on Daniels page.

SONGS IN THE KEY OF DANIEL JOHNSTON

To coincide with The Long Night of the Biennial Red Wire will be hosting a fantastic array of music and bands covering Daniel Johnston tracks. The 5 bands/ musicians playing are The Ice King of California, Hackney Carriages, A Cup of Tea, Man in the Dark and The Blind Rabbit Choir. The Event will be in our basement, and will, like the exhibition, be unmissable. If your doing some other thing on this night- really, will it be better than this?

NAN TOUR: THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL?

The Winner Takes It All? Panel discussion, Sunday 26th, 1.45 pm at Static, 23 Roscoe Lane, Liverpool L1 9JD.

From Friday, 25 artists will arrive in Liverpool to explore the Capital of Culture. Through their investigations and the experience of The Royal Standard and Red Wire we will discuss the opportunities and meaning the title has for artists. Many of the attending artists have links to other Capitals of Culture including Glasgow (1990) Vilnius (2009) and Istanbul (2010) and as such will make a valuable contribution to the debate.
To book a place at the discussion email info@the-royal-standard.com.

If you can't make it you can follow it online at
www.winnertakesitallscheme.blogspot.com

Fear Yourself

Fear Yourself opened on Friday to a great reception. The exhibition looks fabulous- its certainly the best thing we've done, and had changed our perception of what we can do. A couple of previews are available: one from Liverpool.com (I like "Red Wire has come up trumps again!") and a great write up from  Mark Powell of The Metro

No Tickets

We're getting a few emails through about tickets, so this is just a note to say there's no tickets or P.V cards for the Daniel Johnston show- your welcome to come along (as long as your not a tramp or baghead or anything).

The Pitch

The second half of The Pitch, hosted by The Open Eye Gallery is reviewing the progress of the winners on October 7th. As you might remember Amy Goring was one of three artists publicly voted to win the £600 casah prize, and she will be presenting an update.

Some press

Fear Yourself is featured in the present issue of Liverpool.com magazine courtesy of Ian Jackson. Also, whilst reviewing Liverpool International Artists, Nick Holloway also gave kudos to Red Wirer Joshua Tennant's 'The Eating Series' in the Liverpool Metro.

Mike's in the Tate

Mike Aitken is always in the Tate because he works there, but now he is accompanied by his own work as part of the North by Northwest exhibition, which is also showing at Red Wire. Mike's 'Plan some plan over some plan' (last shown at the 5th house exhibition) can be seen in the Tate's hospitality room

Long night of the Biennial

Bands and musicians are queueing up to play at the Long Night of the Biennial- we are going to have a Daniel Johnston night, with musicians own interpretations of his tracks. Theres some names many of you will be familiar with currently being sought. With competition high on whats going on this night- we're confident this will be unmissable

Crapola & North x north-west images
Friday night saw the opening of two of our exhibitions- Soup vs the Henry Moore Institute and Crapola Central. The night went well, as there was three exhibitions on in the building (including one in Curve Gallery) there were people mingling all over until 2am.

Catalogue signed off
Dominic Witter and Wendy Legg of JMU design pod have finished compiling the mass of emails I've been sending, and the is being printed today. It'll hopefully be available for the opening of Crapola and Soup vs Peripheral.

Crapola Central & North by Northwest flyers

We're only printing 100 of the Crapola flyer, so if you get one, keep it like its a golden diamond, because it might be worth something one day.

The eating is over
Since Red Wire's residency in Paros Joshua Tennant has been making videos of himself eating various foods. What began with Kinder eggs went through 6 other performances (including Baby Bell during Roy Castles...) and has just finihsed with eating 24 hard boiled eggs. The 8 films will be exhibited at Novas C.U.C during the Liverpool Independents Biennial, starting 20th September

Sefton Open
One of the original Red Wire members, Chris Mills has got work in the forthcoming Sefton Open held at the Atkinson Gallery in Southport. The exhibition runs from 20th September- 8th November. Chris has also moved back to Liverpool from Manchester.

Drawing Exhibition

A couple of days before opening a drawing exhibition was organised. It featured Roxy Topia, Paddy Gould, Joe McNulty, Nicola Fitzsimmons and Hannah from Ireland. It went pretty well, we had a relaxed atmosphere and was a kind of continuation of the recent house exhibitions

Roys images

Finally managed to get images from the wonderfully enjoyable Roy Castles Vision of Hell. Check them here

New Work- Chris Mills

'Night Over Clearwater' is the latest in Chris Mill's paintings. It both reflects a continuation of Chris's style and a development from his early work, as his settings which now often are waterscapes, are getting increasingly human- indeed this is the first piece to include a figure.

Roy Castle would have been proud.
Last night saw the opening of Roy Castle's Vision of Hell, a Red Wire organized event at the Wolstenholme. Dominic Witter and Wendy Legg of JMU design pod have finished compliing the mass of emails i've been sending, and the catalogue is being printed today. It'll hopefully be available for the opening of Crapola and Soup vs Peripheral. The night went really well- I mean really really well. This is the second exhibition in a row we've had a fun/ performative element, and both have been really exciting. There more about the exhibition here.

Roy Castle's vision of hell flyer.
Mikes death metal font adorns our latest flyer. Keep your eyes peeled.
Always good to have artinliverpool.com supporting us too

Daniel Johnston in Manchester
If you didn't go to Daniel Johnston playing in Manchester, unlucky.
Daniel was supported by Scout Niblett, James Mcanew (Yo la Tengo), Jad Fair (Half Japanese), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) all of whom played as his backing band. The show was frigging ace.
In case you didn't know, Daniel is exhibiting in Red Wire on October 17th.

ROY CASTLES VISIONS OF HELL
Amy, Mike, Harry and Josh are going to be exhibiting at The Wolstenholme Projects amongst a whole host of Liverpool artists (including Roxy and Oliver of A Proper Horrorshow). The theme is breaking a record- and this is being stretched every way it'll bend to make peoples projects (bearly) fit in. It opens on the 8th Auguest and should be a hoot

Up and coming
As previously mentioned, Toby Saunders is currently showing in the up and Coming exhibition at Novas C.U.C. A plesent surprise was to see Red Wire Open 2007 exhibitor Helen Blejerman there too.

Your Art movie & podcast
Thanks to out Carlisle Building friend Tim Brunsden, Your Art Show was filmed for Liverpool-stories.com. To see us blabbering about the possible meanings of the exhibition and getting covered in paint click here. Thanks to artinliverpool.com for interviewing both artists about their intentions and enjoyment of the exhibition, you can here them here

Up and Coming
C.U.C at Novas is doing an excellent job of supporting local artists, and their forthcoming exhibition 'Up and Coming' is no different. Among the 50-60 artists in the exhibition is Red Wire's own Toby Saunders who will be exhibiting his recently completed clay aquatic-like creature. This piece has taken ages, and is well worth as see- the private view is Thursday 3rd July. Below: the creature pre-firing

Your Art Show
If you managed to make it to Your Art Show's Private View, I hope you had as good a time as we did. Milk, Two Sugars encouraged the complete destruction of the gallery- paint bombs, sprays, and paint pots all helped to flood our gallery with good happyness and...paint

New member: Vanessa Bartlett
After the recent arrivals of Debbie Ryan and Oliver Lomax, Red Wire is pleased to welcome the third and final new member of the spring- artist and curator Vanessa Bartlett. Set to be curating Slowness in Red Wire at the end of the year, Vanessa has exhibited all over Liverpool and Glasgow and as far afield as a solo show in Finland.

            Salutations to the sun               Welcome

House exhib at Josh and Amy's

The latest exhibition in peoples flats and houses was held las night in Josh and Amys flat. Exhibitors included a rosta of Red Wire members (Amy, Mike, Josh, Harry), a past exhibitor (Roxy Topia) former member Hamish McLain and friends (Sacha Waldon, Paddy Gould, Joe McNulty) with art in the front room, corridor and the bathroom was filled with Joes drawings

(clockwise from top left) Roxy Topia, Mike Aitken, Amy Goring, Hamish Mclain (Drawing) Josh Tennant (video) Paddy Gould, Harry Lawson, Hamish Mclain) "Sausage tit" Sacha Waldron

Pitching for glory

Red Wire's Amy Goring became one of three artists to win £600 and the chance to be mentored by a leading professional. The Pitch, organized by film-artist Rebecca Lennon at The Open Eye Gallery offered artsits with ideas using lens-based media the chance to win funding to produce their ideas, and Amys idea of having Brian Blessed narrate Steph Butterworth's worms problem on The Pilgrims toilet door was one of three winners. Well done Amy

Your Art Flyer
Keep your eyes peeled for this flyer, it'll be in all places I go in between now and the 20th (so probably just The Baltic Fleet). The mistake on this flyer is theres no date (maybe the worst mistake to date) so when thats poorly stamped on the back, we'll be ready.
If you come to the P.V, behind the bar theres the holy grail of P.V merchandise- Fridge Magnets.

Oliver Lomax
Ben Small's replacement in the studio is painter, poet and musician Oliver Lomax. After studying with most of us at JMU in 2005, Oliver has returned from Manchester and is back in Liverpool. He is the lead singer and guitarist of The Reveres, and is currently exhibiting in Birmingham's Snap Gallery in a Bob Dylan themed exhibition.

England's New Trinity of love- Oliver Lomax
Timescapes
Red Wire Open 2006 exhibitor Adrian Pritchard has built a gallery in Blackpool. BADept's first exhibition featured Red Wirer Chris Mills, and Red Wire cohort Simon Alabaster.

Featuring Red Wire's Harry Lawson who exhibited a re-made swimming pool, a poster paint volcano and triangular lamp. Also featured were an fine selection of Red Wire exhibitors: Gabriel Stones, And Mealor and George Thomas (Skull) and Sam Savage (On Growth and Form) and had Arms at Last playing to a crammed busy crowd, as seen below

Your Art Show

Fast approaching is the Milk, Two Sugars exhibition, which is now titled 'Your Art Show'. Questioning issues of authorship, ownership and  artistic creativity, Milk two sugars should be a mix of beer rewards, drawings of knobs and a messy gallery.

2nd leg of 'From the Egg to the Apple'
From the Egg.... shall show in Red Wire on Friday 23rd May, 7pm. Some people are making brand new work, some are altering the Paros work and some are re-showing or re-contextualizing their pieces. Your more than welcome to come along for a drink and gander.

New Saunders work
Toby Saunders has been working almost every day for months in Red Wire producing his fish-like shell sculptures and paintings, there are a few new examples of his progress on his page

Link
I've just spotted Red Wire has a link from Daniel Johnston's website- hihowareyou.com advertising his exhibition. Pretty cool

House Exhibition
The fourth exhibition held in peoples houses took place last night, and it featured Red Wirer's Amy and Josh. Held at a flat on Princes Avenue it also featured Paddy Gould, Jo McNulty and Roxy Topia (A Proper Horrorshow) as well as three acoustic performances.

Debbie Ryan
Red Wire warmly welcomes our newest member. Debbies collage's have been exhibit widely accross the North West, and currently has work in Eggspace. You can see Debbie page here, or her own website

We're back.
Red Wire has returned from our residency from the island of Paros as our photos and blog will expand upon, we really enjoyed and learnt from the trip, and thanks to IPAC have been offered another exhibition for a collaborative piece later in the year. From the egg to the Apple will have it second leg at Red Wire in May

Paros images
There will be constant updates with more pictures, for now here is some

Mikes talk.
Last Wednesday Mike gave a talk to the Parosians (?), mostly members the island artists group IPAC, whom have strong links to The Apothiki, where our residency is being held. Mikes introduction to Red Wire gave the members an introduction to how the gallery began, each members art, the zine and exhibitions as well as our future plans.

Paros News
Well, we've made it. Red Wire is currently on the island of Paros in the baking sunshine in one of the most beautiful galleries you'll step foot in. We are nearly half way through our residency here, and we're all at various stages of production of brand new work to exhibit on the 18th April. We are going to try and keep individual blogs as we go along, you can find them here.

Soup P.V

The private Viewing at Bright New Art last week, which includes both Mike and Katie went really well. Although its a small gallery, the work looked well put together, with notable inclusions from (Redskyatnight) exhibitor Louise Waller among the stand out pieces.

Daniel Johnston's work is here!
Got to sleep about 2.30am last night, so the last thing I wanted to happen was the dreadful noise of the door buzzer at 8.30am. There is one thing that could make this a good thing: approximately 40 Daniel Johnston prints being delivered to our door, and what do you know?. In our front room now is wonderful images of Daniels other family of friends: Joe the Boxer, Jeramiah the frog of innocence, Flying eyeballs, Satan, Bloody rainbows and a wonderful array of torsos. Get excited. Get very excited.
Daniel opens 17th October at Red Wire Gallery.

4 Weeks to go
Our residency on the Greek island of Paros is now only 4 weeks away. Our individual plans are all coming together, and whilst we're sticking under the theme of 'From the egg to the apple', our ideas couldn't be more different. We have also confirmed we will be giving a talk with the group IPAC whilst staying over there. The residency will run from 6th- 17th April with the exhibition opening from 18th - 20th at The Apothiki Gallery. We'll be letting our hair down on the 18th for a few ouzo's for a Private Viewing too, so if your in Europe, best get down there.

Red Wire exhibitor at Liverpool Art Prize

Jayne Lawless, who exhibited in the seminal Red Wire 2006 Open last night unveiled a new piece of work, as well as 'The thing that holds youback (pictured) at The Liverpool Art Prize in new Liverpool gallery Novas.

Soup Soup a-tasty Soup.
For an unknown reason The Tate lot call themselves 'Soup', and they include two Red Wirer's- Michael Aitken and Katie Halsall who will be exhibiting new work as part of Soup in New Brighton at Bright New Art. (8 Atherton Street, New Brighton, Wallasey, CH45 2NY)

29th February - 24th March
Private View: Friday 29th February from 6.30pm
Gallery Open 10 - 4 Wed - Sun

We're officially part of the Art World
This months copy of Art World arrived today, and featured in it is no other than Red Wire. The article, part of a two page feature on Liverpool in the year of the capital of culture has four sections devoted to "Artist led organisation's that are making an impact"
Among them is us, and mentioned underneath a picture of our messy spot is mentioned "Red Wire's thriving space is home to both studios and a gallery".
Art World have gone as far as to feature three zines in a special section, included in which is Mercy, Sketch Stance, and our very own, (and impending) Red Wire zine. Absolutely marvelous.

Biennial update event.
The update for the Biennial was last Tuesday at 68 Hope Street, many organisation's and sole artists talked about their plans for the year, and one of them was us. If you weren't there, then I am not telling you what were up to yet, although as our plans are pretty amazing, you'll probably hear it word-of-mouth.

Chris Mills exhibition
P.V 24th January @ Artfinder Gallery

Red Wirer Chris Mills has a well-deserved solo exhibition- 'Imagined Landscapes' will include three new works for the exhibition, one being Pursuit (above), which shall compliment Mill's output over 2007.

It shall be held at Artfinder Gallery, and open on January 24th till 4th March.

Confirmed Date for next exhibition

Red Wire is taking a (well deserved?) break from exhibtion's for the start of the year. However, we have recently confirmed to date for our first exhibition of 2008. Bob Milner and Tom Senior from Huddersfield aka 'Milk Two Sugars' will open on June 20th. Get excited now.

Guardian and Observer
Red Wire has been featured in both these national newspapers over the past few weeks. On Sunday 23rd Red Wire member Nicola Fitzsimmons was one of 9 Liverpudlian cultural icons to be questioned on the Capital of culture and so on, and last Saturday (5th January) the Guardian had a pull out section in the guide which mentioned Red Wire Zine to be "a fanzine riddled with surreal comic humour, poetry and witty observations". You can't ask for better than that.

Kai-Oi Jay Yung
Is working in Red Wire until mid-March. Jay is all over the Liverpool art-scene, recently returning from that Lybia trip with Thomas Harold et all. Jay is working on 'Paradise Stories' which will be held in The International Gallery (where 'Aiming for Heights' was held) next year.

Artworld
Red Wire is set to be included in the January edition of leading arts magazine Artworld. Contance Wyndham recently interviewed me on behalf of Red Wire to talk about the Liverpool art scene, the Capital of Culture and most importantly Red Wire. Look out, there might even be a pic.

Daily Post review.
The Liverpool Metro has always been an advocate of our activities, and now Red Wire is pleased to be in The Daily Post. Reviewer Kenn Taylor summed up The 2007 Red Wire Open as "An excellent exhibition" and "an eclectic mix of work from a range of young artists, encompassing everything from photography to sculpture and even a mechanical contraption".

'Listen to the Lion III'- Matthew James Kay

Art Work of the Day
Matthews 'Listen to the Lion 3' has been voted art work of the day by Ian Jackson at artinliverpool.com, you can see it here

Harry Lawson

Red Wire has a new member for the first time in what seems like ages. Harry Lawson graduated from Liverpool JMU last year, and earlier this year appeared in Stifled. His unique view on looking at things is more than welcome in Red Wire, and he should be an asset in our impending group exhibitions

Turner Prize & artinliverpool.com Maps

Just to say we're happy we are featured on both. Smack in the middle of the Turner Prize one and lucky number 8 on Ian Jacksons version

Red Wire Open 2007
16th November 2007

Submissions have now closed for entries to the Open, we will keep you posted as to successful applicants and send out invites in the upcoming week

Paros

Next April 8 Red Wire members are jetting off to the Greek island of Paros for a 18 day residency at The Apothiki International Foundation for Contemporary Art. All work will be created new on the island, and will be exhibited at the illustrious gallery for the end of our stay. Needless to say we're all massively excited about this prospect, and it should be our highlight of next year.

A Proper Horrorshow

Roxy Topia and Oliver Braid recently exhibited A Proper Horrorshow at our Red Wire Gallery. It was a bizarre eclectic mix of ideas, which can be viewed here

Red Wire Zine.

All artists are welcome to submit to our next zine so if you have any talent in any disipline that can be photocopied in black and white, please email us, as after our last issue, which was more stacked than usual, we want more more more
