Simon Jones is a composer, performer and crossdisciplinary artist based in Liverpool. As well as being a member of Red Wire, he is one of the leading members of Frakture, a Liverpool-based organisation promoting free improvised music around the North West of England, and a founding member of Liverpool- and Edinburgh-based noise group, Noise Club. Simon performs solo with his acousmatic noise project, Hot Hail, and plays in a number of groups, including the a.P.A.t.T. Orchestra, Black Forest Orchestra, Shirakashi, Id of Morbius, Fraktal, i:Object, and several other groups, as well as delivering workshops both in free improvisation and on 20th Century composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage and Cornelius Cardew, and performing work by these and other 20th & 21st Century composers live in public.
Over more than a decade, Simon has played with Damo Suzuki (Can), Vasily Petrenko (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra), Eddie Prevost (AMM), Ensemble 10/10, Carlos Zingaro (Fluxus), Simon Fell (Badland), Llorenç Barber (Fluxus), and many others.
Simon's compositional work deals with sound-colour as melody, microtonality, and notions of continuity. As an installation artist, his work explores interactivity, creating immersive and multisensory pieces, working not only with sound and vision, but also smell and touch. One of Simon's primary concerns in both his music and artwork is how to represent objectively the way we perceive the world subjectively.
Hot Hail is a musical extension of Simon's work more generally, keeping the same concerns as in his compositional work, but fused with the techniques of free improvisation. In Hot Hail, Simon performs on an array of found objects, effects and laptop, creating dynamic soundscapes that range from the darkly disturbing to the strangely sublime. Hot Hail is an exploration of the inner life of the objects around us.
